Caring for your mental health is just as important as caring for your physical wellbeing. At Kardinia Health, we understand that good healthcare relies on strong connections between you and your care team, as well as among the professionals supporting you. That’s why we take a multidisciplinary approach, with GPs and Geelong psychologists working together to provide the best care for your mental health.
How Kardinia Health’s Geelong Psychologists and GPs Collaborate for Your Care
Your mental health journey often starts with your GP. While you don’t need a referral to see a psychologist, visiting your GP first can be helpful in several ways. They can recommend a psychologist who best matches your needs and circumstances, ensuring you receive the most appropriate support.
Your GP can also assess whether you’re eligible for a Mental Health Treatment Plan. An initiative designed to make accessing psychological care more affordable. This plan outlines your treatment goals, available support services, and your agreed-upon next steps. It also allows you to claim Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual and 10 group sessions with a mental health professional each calendar year.
Once you’re connected with a psychologist, your GP and psychologist may work together through a shared care approach to ensure your treatment remains consistent and well-coordinated. While psychologists won’t share detailed therapy notes, they can, with your consent provide your GP with general updates or treatment recommendations to help support your broader health needs.
This collaborative approach helps ensure that your care is well connected, with both your physical and mental health considered together.
