Kardinia Health now offers iron infusions at our weekly clinic. This service is available to both our patients and Geelong and surrounds general community members whose regular GP clinics may not offer this treatment.

How to Access Iron Infusion Services at Kardinia Health Medical Centre

For Kardinia Health Patients

If you are a Kardinia Health patient, speak with your GP to assess whether an iron infusion is right for you. If required, they will organise your pathology, prescribe the medication, and book you into our weekly iron infusion clinic.

Referred Patients from Other Clinics

If your current GP clinic does not offer iron infusions, they can refer you to Kardinia Health for the procedure. You will then return to your regular GP for ongoing care and follow-up.

To proceed, please ensure you have:

  • A referral letter from your GP including your medical history, current medications, and any allergies
  • Recent pathology results: Full Blood Count and Iron Studies (from the last 3 months)
  • A valid script for Ferinject (up to 1g), to be brought with you on the day. Our Kardinia Health Pharmacy can assist with dispensing.

A Kardinia Health GP will complete the consent form with you at the time of your infusion appointment, and you will be closely monitored during the infusion to ensure your comfort and safety.

What is an Iron Infusion?

An intravenous (IV) iron infusion involves administering iron through a vein using a cannula. It helps replenish iron levels when oral supplements are not effective or appropriate. This service is available to all members of our Geelong and surrounds community with an appropriate referral.

Why is Iron Important?

Iron plays a vital role in producing haemoglobin, the molecule in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout your body. Low iron levels may lead to iron deficiency anaemia, which may cause tiredness, fatigue, shortness of breath, or difficulty concentrating.

Iron infusions are an option when oral supplements are not suitable or have not been effective. They provide a rapid and effective way to restore iron levels and relieve symptoms.

Costs

  • Standard infusion fee: $215 (Medicare rebate of $42.85 available)
  • If cannulation is unsuccessful: Private fee of $95 (Medicare rebate of $42.85)
