Incontinence affects people of all ages and genders, and can significantly impact daily life, confidence and wellbeing. Whether it’s a few drops when you sneeze or a more persistent issue, urinary and bowel incontinence are more common than you might think, and you’re not alone.

At Kardinia Health, we understand that incontinence can be distressing, but there are effective ways to manage it. Our pelvic health physiotherapists offer personalised care for women, men (including prostate-related concerns), and children experiencing bladder and bowel difficulties.

Incontinence Is More Common Than You Think

Incontinence affects around 1 in 4 adult Australians, and in 2023 alone, more than 7.2 million people across the country were living with the condition. While it’s often assumed to be a concern for older adults, 7 in 10 people with incontinence are under 65, with the average age being just 51. Women are twice as likely as men to experience incontinence, with 4 in 10 women and 2 in 10 men affected. These figures highlight that incontinence is both common and treatable and you’re never alone in seeking support.

How Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Can Help

Physiotherapy plays a key role in managing incontinence, often as a first-line, non-invasive treatment. Our pelvic floor physiotherapists can assess what’s going on, help strengthen and retrain the muscles that support bladder and bowel control and guide you with strategies tailored to your body and goals.

From postnatal care to managing symptoms after prostate surgery or supporting children through developmental continence challenges, our approach is evidence-based and supportive.

Working Together to Improve Continence

Incontinence physiotherapy is just one of the specialised services available at Kardinia Health. We take the time to understand your concerns and work with you to find practical, achievable ways to manage or resolve symptoms. Whether you’re experiencing leaks, urgency, pelvic heaviness or nighttime accidents, we’re here to help.
